The Hamsa is also known as the Hand of Fatima – after the daughter of Muhammad- and it means literally Five. It represents the Five Pillars of Islam and it is said to offer protection against the evil eye from Mesopotamian times. Also, it brings abundance, peace, prosperity, and happiness to the wearer.  The Hamsa is a very popular amulet throughout North Africa and the Middle East.

You can find it commonly used in jewelry and wall hangings. You can see it with the fingers up or down as the protection offered is the same. There are some combinations with the Medusa Eye as an extra shield against the evil eye.
